What we do

Shawlsinging is a metaphor for the process of translation, a paradigm for the production of different types of work created by means of translating between different media (textiles to poetry), different genres (a poem to a play), different channels (written to oral) or different languages (English to Croatian). And vice versa. Shawlsung is the product of the process.

On this site, we present some of our collaborative work, as well as our individual work. We intend the content of the site to revolve rather than become accumulative: work will appear and disappear, to reappear later often in a different form. In the future, we may present whole works, but for the moment we largely present tasters of what we have produced, in the expectation of being able to present them eventually in print form.

The digital format does, however, allow some forms of play not open to print in matters of presentation. The Laceland, for example, is offered as a maze, with each page represented by an icon placed within an oblong structure; passage through the structure by clicking on the icons in any order reveals the elements of the story, which the reader can pass through at will and organise at will. Or become lost in. For the lost, a plan may be available on request. Equally, The Carpet Weavers, from its first iteration as a story, now exists as a radio play in CD form and as a stage play in DVD form, excerpts from which may eventually be uploaded. It also exists in both English and Croatian in all written forms.

Što radimo

Pletopjevanje je metafora za proces prevodilaštva, paradigma za stvaranje različitih vrsta djela putem prevođenja iz jednoga medija u drugi (tkanine u poeziju), iz jednog žanra u drugi (pjesme u dramu), iz jednoga kanala u drugi (pismenog u usmeni) ili iz jednoga jezika u različit jezik (engleskog u hrvatski). I obrnuto. Pletopjevanje je proizvod ovoga postupka.

Na ovoj stranici predstavljamo neke od naših radova nastalih u međusobnoj suradnji, kao i one nastale zasebno. Namjera nam je da se sadržaj stranice smjenjuje umjesto da se nakuplja: određeno djelo će se pojavljivati i nestajati, da bi se kasnije opet pojavilo, često u drugačijem obliku. U budućnosti ćemo možda prikazati cjelovita djela, ali trenutno predstavljamo tek uzorke za kušanje onoga što smo proizveli, u očekivanju da ćemo ova djela u konačnici moći predstaviti u tiskanom obliku.

Digitalni format, međutim, dopušta neke oblike igre koje po pitanju prezentacije nije moguće pretočiti u tisak. Primjerice, Zemlja čipki se nudi u obliku labirinta, a svaka je stranica predstavljena ikonom smještenom u duguljastu strukturu; klikovima na ikone unutar strukture po bilo kojem redoslijedu otkrivaju se elementi priče, kroz koju čitatelj može prolaziti po želji organizirajući elemente po želji. Ili se izgubiti. Za izgubljene, plan može biti dostupan na zahtjev. Jednako tako, Tkalci tepiha od svojega prvoga pojavka kao priče sada postoje kao radio drama u obliku CD-a, kao i kazališna predstava u DVD formatu, čiji se isječci naposljetku mogu učitati. Ovo djelo dostupno je i na engleskom i na hrvatskom jeziku u svim pisanim oblicima.

About Us

Valerie Clarke Brajuha

Valerie has worked as a tutor/lecturer in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at universities in Paris, Shanghai, Zagreb and Birmingham (UK) and has recently completed an MPhil in Applied Linguistics at Lancaster University (UK). For many years, she has also written poetry and short stories, often incorporating different genres within a single work and ‘translating’ such works into plays or indeed textiles. Much of this output has been translated into Croatian by Ivana Krencer.

Ivana Krencer

Ivana became a member of an amateur theatrical group on leaving university in Zagreb with a degree in English Language and Comparative Literature and taught English for a number of years at secondary school before becoming a freelance translator of English into Croatian and vice versa, working on novels and academic journal submissions. As well as producing her own work in the form of radio plays, stories and poetry, she is responsible for the translations between languages and for the original radio play of The Carpet Weavers, broadcast on Croatian Radio 3 under the title Tkalci tepiha.

Rene Medvešek

Formerly an actor on film, TV and the stage, Rene is both a director on the commercial stage in Zagreb and a professor at the Academy of Dramatic Arts of the University of Zagreb. He is responsible for the stage version of The Carpet Weavers (entitled Maharanth), and directed a student production at the University.

Valerie Clarke Brajuha

Valerie je radila kao mentorica/predavačica Engleskog jezika u akademske svrhe (EAP) na sveučilištima u Parizu, Šangaju, Zagrebu i Birminghamu (Ujedinjeno Kraljevstvo), a nedavno je i magistrirala primijenjenu lingvistiku na Sveučilištu Lancaster (UK). Već dugi niz godina piše poeziju i kratke priče, nerijetko inkorporirajući različite žanrove u jedinstveno djelo i potom ta i takva djela ‘prevodi’ u predstave ili prave tkanine. Veći dio ovih uradaka na hrvatski je jezik prevela Ivana Krencer.

Ivana Krencer

Ivana je surađivala s jednom amaterskom kazališnom skupinom u vrijeme stjecanja diplome iz Engleskog jezika i Komparativne književnosti na Filozofskom fakultetu Sveučilišta u Zagrebu, a kasnije je niz godina predavala engleski jezik u srednjoj školi, prije nego što je postala prevoditeljica s engleskog na hrvatski jezik i obrnuto. Osim što stvara vlastita djela u obliku radio drama, kratkih priča i pjesama, odgovorna je za prijevode s jednog jezika na drugi i za originalni radio-dramski tekst Tkalci tepiha.

Rene Medvešek

Ranije glumac na filmu, TV-u i sceni, Rene je i kazališni redatelj i profesor na Akademiji dramske umjetnosti Sveučilišta u Zagrebu. Odgovoran je za prilagođavanje teksta Tkalci tepiha (Maharanth) za kazališnu scenu kao i za režiju predstave.
